FAQs

TRAINING FAQS

How do I qualify to be considered for training as a Parting Properly Mentor?

The primary qualification you must have is a desire to help others and a willingness to provide your skills, training, and experience to couples who are in desperate need of help as they encounter one of the most devastating, debilitating, and emotionally draining occurrences in their lives.

You will be well rewarded both financially and professionally, but that cannot be your primary motivation.  You should become a Parting Properly Mentor because you see the enormous need, and sincerely believe you can help.

Parting Properly does not expect you to be experienced in mediation. Parting Properly will train you to become competent in dealing with the issues facing couples in divorce. Some are logistical, and Parting Properly will step in and help you with those. Most are emotional. That is where your expertise will be required.

In considering this opportunity, you will be required to make a self assessment.  It is important that, when you apply for training, you feel comfortable that your education, experience, and skill have prepared you to provide the necessary guidance to assist two people who are experiencing real trauma, and who need you more than ever.

Couples and individuals may need your services as they contemplate divorce.

They may need your services after they have gone through divorce.

But you can be most helpful by guiding and supporting them when they are going through the process.  You can alleviate the emotional problems that they would, otherwise, have to deal with after the divorce.

If you really want to be helpful, it is important that, in addition to your therapeutic skills. you learn how to empower couples to make fair and mutually beneficial decisions.  You do not make decisions for them.  Your responsibility is to help them get into a mindset that allows them to make the best, most fair, most practical decisions, and come to agreements that enable them to move forward.  That is what training to become a Parting Properly mentor teaches you to do.

Our Parting Properly Trainers have decades of experience solving problems couples encounter in divorce. They will teach you how to apply proven exercises and methods that assist couples to recognize what is in their own self interest. You will not be required or permitted to offer legal advice; nor will you have to deal with any of the paperwork; nor will you ever have to go to court.

After the initial training, Parting Properly support continues until you are totally comfortable in bringing couples through the process, and even thereafter if necessary.

Parting Properly is the only firm in the world that supports and empowers you to use your expertise in this exciting new way.

In order to be considered for training, you will be asked to complete an application.

After we review the information you provide, we will call you for a personal interview.  We will then provide a training date and logistical information.

How will I be able to integrate being a Parting Properly Mentor into my current endeavors?

It is easy to integrate acting as a Parting Properly Mentor into your schedule.  You can set your own schedule and be available to clients at reasonably convenient times. If you do not wish to use your own phone number, you will be provided with a Parting Properly telephone number that will allow you to take and respond to messages.  Your first contact with prospective clients will be on the telephone.

The first meeting is always face to face with clients.  The meeting can take place in your office or in an office provided by Parting Properly.  A Parting Properly Mentor will accompany you.  Subsequent interaction with the couple or individuals will involve relatively little time spent face to face. Most verbal interaction will take place on the telephone. Most written communication will be accomplished by texting, messaging, or email.

Each couple will be billed by the hour by Parting Properly, based upon time sheets you provide, and you will be paid by Parting Properly for each hour you spend on behalf of the couple, measured in ten minute increments. Normally, approximately 20 hours of your time will be required from the time you meet the couple until their divorce is final. That time will be spread over an approximately six to seven month period.

Mentors have found it challenging to deal with more than ten couples a month, while still continuing in their current vocation. However, we leave it to you to decide the number of couples you are willing and able to mentor.

There will be some time that you will spend dealing with the administrative requirements imposed by Parting Properly. That time should not exceed four hours a month.

In short, you will have control of how you structure your time in order to perform services as a Parting Properly mentor and meet your other obligations.

Once I have been trained by Parting Properly, what are the next steps?

After training, we will discuss how you can move forward, with our continuing help of course, as a Parting Properly Mentor. We will then determine the geographical area in which you would like to work.

While we do not license or assign specific areas to individual mentors, we, obviously, consider our mentors’ desires. While much of a mentor’s service will not require face to face contact and can be accomplished with electronic communication, clients still like to feel that their mentor is locally available.

Once we have agreed with you that we wish to move forward together, we will jointly execute a Mentor Engagement Letter. A copy of the letter is included in the Training Manual. Generally, it describes our relationship with you, the pay scale, and the details of our agreement for you to act as a Parting Properly Mentor.

We will then work with you to attract clients.  While we cannot guarantee to refer clients on any specific schedule, it is, obviously, in the interest of both of us to refer clients to you as often as possible.

We will make all of our marketing material available to you, including banners, links, and text if you desire to promote your new status on your website, LinkedIn account, or social media, and we will continue to market and advertise for clients in your area.

When prospective clients in your area contact us and you have agreed to mentor them, we will assist you to arrange a face to face meeting with both husband and wife, at which time the Client Engagement Letter will be signed, the retainer will be collected, and your work with the couple will begin.

In your training you will have been instructed about collecting the necessary information for the documents to be filed to begin the process, which will be taken care of by Parting Properly.

You will not be required to prepare any documents that will be filed with the divorce court. During the six month period you will facilitate the necessary agreements between the parties. You will not offer legal advice, but you will empower the couple to reach the most fair and mutually beneficial agreements. In doing so you will use your skills and the methods you have learned in training, and you will receive support from Parting Properly.

At the end of your efforts, the divorce will have been completed and the couple and their children, if any, will have moved confidently into the next phase of their lives. At that point you will be able to sit back with a feeling of satisfaction that you have given a priceless gift to clients that will have become your friends.

What kind of income from acting as a Parting Properly Mentor can I expect?

Generally speaking, the hourly fee that you will receive for the work you do on behalf of Parting Properly clients you mentor will always be more than your regular hourly rates.

Parting Properly is cognizant of the need to compensate you appropriately for the time you allocate to being a Parting Properly Mentor. It is our goal to free you from the burden of the logistics of divorce, and to place you in a position where you can utilize your skills, experience, and training to make the process for each couple not only as conflict free as possible, but as productive and empowering as possible.

You will be participatory in changing lives, and you deserve a commensurate reward.

The terms of your remuneration are determined at the time the Mentor Engagement Letter is signed, and will be based upon valuing your time. Our average commitment of an hourly fee for services provided by mentors is $185.00. It is planned that the company will offer annual cash or stock bonuses, depending on the success of the company and the services you have provided.

Parting Properly will provide marketing and advertising and you can market your new qualification as a Parting Properly Mentor on your website, LinkedIn and social media accounts.  You will also be permitted to link to the Parting Properly website, and Parting Properly will provide banners for your site and brochures for your office.  Together, we will attempt to maximize the number of couples you wish to represent.

If 3% of the approximately 160,000 couples filing divorce petitions annually in California decide to utilize Parting Properly to get them through the divorce process, the number of couples represented by Parting Properly Mentors would be 4,800, which, if serviced by 200 Parting Properly Mentors, would yield an average client load of 24 couples per mentor per year. The rate at which couples will engage our Parting Properly services is uncertain. However, the company desires to expand rapidly.

You will find the training very enlightening and educational, and, if you only mentor one couple you will have paid for the cost of your training and you will have acquired a very valuable new skill.

Why do clients choose a Parting Properly Mentor instead of retaining separate attorneys?

Many clients tell us they have heard the horror stories of the dysfunctional divorce system. Some have a relative or friend who has had a disastrous personal experience in the system. Some just hate the idea of handing their lives over to combative attorneys, or the idea of letting a judge who will never be able to really know them make decisions that could be life altering. Some are afraid that, if they get into the court system, they may lose control over the lives of their children. There are a thousand reasons.

Perhaps the most important reason is that, after talking with one of our mentors, they develop a relationship of trust. They know that with one competent, experienced mentor there is no chance that conflict will be provoked by an over-zealous attorney battling with another over-zealous attorney.

They know how much less expensive one mentor is than two separate attorneys. And, finally, they understand that they do not need two separate attorneys.

They recognize that, with proper assistance, they can retain control over the decision-making process. They understand that fairness and honesty should be the criteria for the result they are seeking, not legal definitions. After talking with a mentor they gain confidence in their own ability, with the assistance of the mentor, to figure things out and reach agreement. In short, they trust their mentor enough to trust themselves.

What if a client asks me a legal question?

You are not required to answer a legal question and you should not do so.

Parting Properly has attorneys available to answer legal questions. All you have to do is say, “Let me have one of our legal experts respond,” and then discuss it with your supervisor at Parting Properly. Parting Properly will take it from there.

In fact, you will almost never get asked a legal question. Many clients come to us having been told that divorce law is a great mystery and that only a trained attorney can get them through the divorce process. When they learn that is not true, and that, in fact, couples can even do their own divorces all by themselves, they quit thinking in terms of wondering how to apply a mysterious law.

When they come to understand that divorcing should be about fairness, and they realize that Parting Properly is committed to that criteria, legal questions seldom come up. Couples realize that the they do not have to buy into the myth that fuels the $50 Billion divorce industry, which is that nobody but separate attorneys and a judge can get them properly divorced.

Our referrals come from people who have and understanding of what we do. They know that we are changing the paradigm of divorce.

Our mantra is that no one should give a third party control over important decisions. We provide the support to enable our couples to avoid that. Once they start down the path of truth, the definitions in a law that some legislator managed to get passed decades ago no longer have any meaning for them.

Do I have to do anything with the clients’ paperwork or file anything with a court?

No.

The couple will be required to provide all the information necessary to prepare the documents necessary to initiate the proceedings and to honestly collect and assemble information regarding their assets and liabilities and their respective incomes and expenses.  You arrange for them to do that and Parting Properly takes care of dealing with the necessary paperwork and filings. The  information provided by the clients enables the filing of the petition for dissolution.  The financial information provided by the clients will enable them to understand where to begin in allocating assets and liabilities and determining support. We have Attorneys, Paralegals, Certified Divorce Financial Advisors (CDFAs) and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), to provide necessary assistance.

What do I do if the divorce involves complicated asset, liability, or support issues?

As noted, you advise the couple to assemble the necessary information as to the assets which they own and the liabilities upon which they are obligated, and their respective incomes and expenses.

The information will usually, in and of itself, suggest choices for division of assets and liabilities and spousal and child support. However, each spouse will most likely have their own perspective, which will not be shared by the other spouse, and/or, the information may be complicated.

In either case you have the couple go through the Parting Properly “Choice Exercise,” and afterward, if there is still any disagreement, you provide the information to your Parting Properly supervisor for assistance. Issues can usually be solved by the couple. However, as necessary, we refer information to our CDFAs and CPAs, and, though seldom necessary, to our attorneys.

What if parents have different views about custody, visitation, and child support?

They will, except in rare cases.

That is where your expertise, experience, understanding of human nature, and understanding of children of divorce come into play.

As you know, divorce is really only about two things: money and kids. Because resources may be limited, the two things may be interconnected. Issues relating to the kids are the most important and challenging. That is one reason couples choose to have a Parting Properly Mentor assist them, rather than relying on two combative attorneys, or a court appointed custody evaluator, or a time-limited judge.

Parents should know the needs of their children and what is best for them. However, parents do not always agree on the details of how to implement a co-parenting program. As should be apparent, such a program is less about legalities than about human nature, emotion, and nurturing.

The issues relating to custody, visitation, and support have only one criteria: What is in the best interest of the children?

Issues relating to children should be one of your strongest motivations for becoming a Parting Properly Mentor. It is one of the most important reasons why couples need you. Application of your skill, training, and experience to craft a plan for two parents, who are sufficiently at odds so that they want to be separated for good, will challenge you. But, it will be worth it.

When you help parents come up with a plan that is truly in the best interest of their children, you will, literally, have fulfilled a part of your life’s destiny.

When the clients have reached agreement on an issue how do I get it incorporated into a written agreement?

The agreements reached by clients on every issue should be synopsized on forms Parting Properly provides and the synopsis should then be submitted to your Parting Properly supervisor. A draft marital settlement agreement incorporating the synopsized agreements will then be prepared for review by you and your clients.

After review and revision, if necessary, the agreement will be placed in a memorandum. It will then be submitted to one of our attorneys who will review it with your clients to make certain that each client understands the consequences, legal and otherwise, and agrees with all the terms as set forth.

At that point the agreement will be finalized and, after execution before a notary public by both parties, a synopsis of the final agreement (also to be notarized) will be prepared for attachment to the proposed judgment of final dissolution which will then be obtained.

What is the schedule for the initial training?

When your interview has been completed satisfactorily and you have paid the fee, you will be provided a comprehensive training manual and permitted to join video conference training sessions.  Video conferencing is much more efficient than pre-scheduling face to face sessions. We arrange all the logistics to connect your electronic device with ours, and the training is presented, essentially, as a webinair. All of the textual material is provided to you electronically.

Training sessions by video conference take place Tuesday through Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and Saturday as designated.

The initial training takes as long as it takes as long as necessary. Our effort is to give you complete training. You will be invited to attend as many sessions as necessary, and may repeat sessions.  The sessions are interactive so that you can ask questions and participate as you learn the skills you will need to be a successful Parting Properly Mentor.

The format of the Training Manual, which is provided to you and which includes forms of necessary documents, is followed in the training sessions.  When you apply for training the table of contents is forwarded to you and when you have been accepted for training you will receive the manual approximately ten days prior to the first session you will attend, in order to be prepared. There are other written materials, books, and internet sites that you will be expected to study and review.

The training is enlightening and enjoyable. When you feel properly prepared and we both have agreed that it is appropriate to execute a Mentor Engagement Letter, we will authorize you to be designated as a Parting Properly Divorce Mentor, with all the benefits and opportunities that such a designation entails.

When clients desire to move forward with you as their divorce mentor, an experienced Parting Properly Divorce Mentor will be designated to accompany you to your initial meeting with the couple. Thereafter, as needed and appropriate, the same mentor will be available to be directly involved with you and the couple, or to be available to provide you with suggestions and guidance. That will continue as long as you feel it is necessary.

Since what we do is so important and so uniquely valuable to our clients it is probable that you will feel, as all of us do, that you are continually learning.
